Piano Voicing

Voicing is the process of modifying or improving the tone of the piano. Voicing is mainly a subjective topic. If you play the piano and complain that the piano doesnʼt sound good to you, using words like “harsh,” “brittle,” “muddy,” or “dull,” your piano may benefit from voicing. But voicing also entails other things, like if the soft pedal on your grand piano does not sound “soft” enough when engaged, or if there is one note that does not sound right or sounds out of place among its neighbors.

Sometimes voicing can involve acoustically modifying the room that the piano is in. A grand piano may sound too bright if it is in a room with hardwood floors, but simply placing a plush, soft rug underneath it may solve the problem. Every situation is unique and voicing should only be considered after the piano has been fine tuned and recently regulated.
